Les Miserables: A Strange Old Woman

Hugo spends this entire chapter telling us about a strange elderly nun that lived in the little convent and seemed to make up the specifics of her rule as she went along. She was very keen to boast of her past and it seems her presence there was a bit of an enigma. In the end this chapter itself is a bit of an enigma. I have no idea what it accomplishes related to the story.
